Comment lire, voir et surtout exposer Yvonne Rainer aujourd’hui ? En plein essor du minimalisme américain, la chorégraphe et cinéaste abandonne toute volonté de neutralité de l’interprète au profit d’une exploration des émotions en jeu dans les relations humaines, sociales et sexuelles. À travers le projet de recherche Performer: A Persona, je souhaite analyser la ationalisation de ses données autobiographiques à des fins politiques et par là même la déconstruction des codes de représentations d’un sujet « féminin » et plus tard « a-féminin ». Après une première étude postulant le nouveau roman comme vecteur paradoxal d’émancipation, ce projet poursuit mon investigation des phénomènes d’interprétation et d’appropriation des écrits français par Yvonne Rainer mais cette fois du côté des études féministes prenant comme point central Monique Wittig et son chantier littéraire. Pour ce faire, j’ai imaginé une méthodologie conjuguant à la fois l’histoire orale revenant sur la période historique marquant le début des études féministes et des études de genre aux États-Unis complété par une étude de terrain dans plusieurs fonds d’archives. Ce projet entend ainsi offrir un point de vue inédit sur le parcours de vie d’une personnalité hors pair du cinéma expérimental nord-américain.
WHERE?
Dans le cadre de ma résidence aux États-Unis, je souhaite explorer plusieurs fonds d’archives basés à New York. Ce séjour marquera également ma première immersion dans les écrits, les notes et les correspondances de Monique Wittig à Beinecke Library, Yale University. Enfin, j’en profiterai pour retourner dans les archives d’Yvonne Rainer au Getty Research Institute de Los Angeles, et finalement me rendre à San Francisco – sa ville natale et lieu fondamental de l’histoire de la communauté LGBTQI+.

WHAT?
How can we read, see, and—above all—exhibit Yvonne Rainer’s work today? While American minimalism was growing, the choreographer and filmmaker dropped all desire for viewer neutrality, favoring instead the exploration of emotions at play in human, social, and sexual relations. Through the research project “Performer: A Persona,” I would like to analyze the rationalization of her autobiographical information for political purposes and, through this, the deconstruction of codes used to represent a “female”—and later “afemale”—subject. After an initial study positing that the nouveau roman is a paradoxical vehicle of emancipation, this project furthers my research on Rainer’s interpretation and appropriation of French writings, but in regard to feminist studies, taking Monique Wittig and her literary works as a central basis. To carry out this project, I have conceived a method that brings together both oral history, looking back at the period that marked the start of feminist and gender studies in the US, and field research in several archival collections. In this way, the project seeks to provide an original perspective on the path of an outstanding figure in North American experimental cinema.
